What Is a Hostile Work Environment?
A hostile work environment is one in which an employee feels unsafe or uncomfortable because of abusive or harassing conduct by other employees at work. A hostile work environment can be caused by workplace sexual harassment, racism, discriminatory remarks by a co-worker or boss, or other discriminatory behavior.
This behavior should be reported to the employer. If the employer fails to take appropriate action and put an immediate stop to the behavior, the employee should speak to an attorney who focuses on employment discrimination claims.
Retaliation by an Employer
If you choose to report the harassing or discriminatory actions at work, it is illegal for your employer to retaliate against you in any way. Your worker rights are protected by state and federal law. If your employer demoted you, fired you, or took other action against you after your reported illegal or discriminatory acts at work, talk to an attorney about your rights and legal options.
